Elementary FAQ

What is the focus of the Elementary program at Omni?

The Elementary program is designed for children who are turning outward in their development, curious, imaginative, and eager to explore big questions. It supports their desire to research, discover, and build reasoning skills, while also helping them develop confidence, social awareness, and a sense of purpose.

How are social and emotional skills supported?

Social development is integral to the Montessori approach. Children are guided to recognize and respect each person's uniqueness, foster uplifting humor, and follow a solid ethical code. They learn to reflect on their actions and value differences, building empathy and strong community connections.

What values guide the Elementary classroom?

Omni’s Elementary program emphasizes self-direction, resilience, critical thinking, and a love of learning. Students are supported in setting goals, completing projects, and evaluating their own work. Imagination, originality, and emotional balance are all valued alongside academic achievement.

Academic Curriculum

How is language taught in the Elementary classroom?

Language is central to the Montessori Elementary curriculum. Students explore the history and function of language, grammar, creative and expository writing, reading comprehension, and oral presentation. They also gain skills in research and using reference materials. Spanish instruction is included throughout the program.

What is the approach to mathematics?

Mathematics is taught through hands-on, culturally contextual materials, starting with the Story of Numerals. Children explore arithmetic, algebra, and geometry through visual and tactile learning tools, building a deep understanding of concepts from basic operations to advanced topics like statistics and equations.

What do students learn in science?

Science begins with the Coming of Life story and spans botany, zoology, ecology, anatomy, chemistry, and physics. Key lessons launch student-led research, with real-world exploration encouraged both indoors and outdoors, supporting scientific thinking and curiosity.

How is geography integrated into the curriculum?

Geography is a foundation of the Elementary curriculum, beginning with the Story of the Universe. Students explore astronomy, geology, and earth science, as well as cultural, political, and economic geography. Lessons are interdisciplinary, often linking with history, art, and the sciences.

How are the arts incorporated?

Music and art are woven throughout the classroom experience. Students explore music through singing, playing instruments, and studying theory and history, while art is explored through diverse media and creative expression. Both are integrated into cultural, historical, and academic studies.

Daily Life and Experiences

What physical activities are offered?

Students enjoy daily outdoor time, as well as access to indoor space during inclement weather. Lower Elementary students engage in imaginative play, while Upper Elementary students develop teamwork and physical skills through sports, games, and yoga—sometimes led by parent volunteers.

What are “Going Outs” and field trips?

“Going Outs” are small-group, student-led excursions connected to classroom work, encouraging independence and real-world engagement. Students research, plan, and organize these trips themselves. In addition, class-wide field trips include museum visits, park days, theater outings, and annual camping experiences.
