Planes of Development
The Montessori Planes of Development
Maria Montessori observed that children grow through distinct stages — which she called planes of development — each with its own unique needs, interests, and ways of learning. She compared these dramatic transformations to a caterpillar becoming a butterfly: each phase looks and feels entirely different yet is a natural part of human growth.
At Omni, our programs are thoughtfully aligned with these planes to support each child’s development at every stage.
Infancy (Birth to Age 6) - The Absorbent Mind
In the first plane, children are sensory explorers — soaking up everything around them like little sponges. They are driven by a deep curiosity about language, movement, and culture. This is a time of incredible brain development, and children thrive in environments that are beautiful, orderly, and rich with hands-on materials.
Omni’s Primary Program is specially designed for this foundational stage, supporting children as they build independence, coordination, and a love of learning.

Childhood (Ages 6 to 12) - The Reasoning Mind
In the second plane, children begin to ask how and why. They develop strong imaginations, abstract thinking, and a desire to explore big ideas — from the workings of the universe to the rules of society. They’re eager to collaborate, question, and create.
Omni’s Elementary Program (Grades 1–6) guides students through this stage with rich, integrated learning experiences that connect ideas across subjects and spark joyful discovery.

Adolescence (Ages 12 to 18) - The Social Self
Adolescents are navigating big changes — physically, emotionally, and socially. They seek purpose, belonging, and ways to contribute meaningfully to their communities. They crave real work, real responsibility, and opportunities for creative expression.
Omni’s Program for Adolescents (Grades 7–9) honors this stage with experiences that develop independence, leadership, and self-awareness — all within a safe, supportive learning environment.
Meeting the Needs of Every Stage
Each plane builds on the one before it. When a child’s developmental needs are met at each stage, they grow into capable, compassionate, and confident individuals — ready to thrive in the next phase of life.
