Free Parent Yoga at Omni

Build Our Tower - Annual Giving Campaign

For the third year, Omni will launch its Annual Giving Campaign. The pledge period runs October 1st through December 15th. The Campaign allows families, alumni, and friends of Omni to donate tax-deductable funds towards the school's and Parent Association's operational costs not covered by tuition. Each year we strive to build the giant Pink Tower that will sit in front of the school. The tower is built as each family participates in the Annual Giving Campaign. Last year we achieved 85% participation, and this year we strive to reach 100% and to putting the last pink cube on the tower! Packets will be mailed by early next week with information and a pledge form. If you have any questions, please contact either Connie Pendergast or Beth Addison.

International Peace Day

September 21, 2009 was the United Nations International Peace Day. Omni joined Montessori schools around the world to sing Light A Candle For Peace with over 50,000 other children this past Monday morning. The song was sung continuously for 24 straight hours. Our adolescents accompanied the children with a full ensemble of instruments. The recording will be posted on-line for viewing.

Pennies for Peace

The Outreach Committee in Mrs. G's class is doing a Pennies for Peace campaign. By participating in Pennies for Peace you make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time. While a penny is worth very little, in impoverished countries a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. Pennies for Peace gives a lasting hope to children half a world away! There will be jars in each classroom for collecting money and we will be handling the money and writing a check to Pennies for Peace when we are finished. This campaign began on September 8 and ends October 30. We have set a goal for of $200 and we would very much appreciate your help. Thank you!

Parent Association

All parents are invited to attend the first Parent Association (PA) meeting of the year. It is on Tuesday, Sept 8 immediately after drop off in the activity center. Coffee, juice, muffins and fruit will be served. The PA supports and enhances Omni in many important ways by raising money for the classrooms and hosting several community events. Don't forget to save the date for the book fair dinner (sponsored by the sixth graders). This dinner is Mexican themed, with tacos, nachos, rice, corn, beans, drinks, and cookies. For a child, a meal will cost $4. For an adult, a meal will cost $6. This dinner will take place on Wednesday, December 2nd at 5:00- 7:30. Also, don't forget about the creperie after school the next day (December 3rd).

Upper Elementary II is running a Toys For Tots drive for the Marine Corps. We would like to help needy kids in the Charlotte area by providing Christmas gifts. BoT Trustee Nominations Due Friday, April 9th

Each year in May the Omni Board of Trustees enjoys the annual springtime process of electing new board members to three year service terms. For the remainder of 2010 and into 2011, the board will be considering several important initiatives that will enable us to fulfill the board’s mission.

The board seeks members to do to its work who will bring to the role their skills and passion to ensure that Omni maintains its character as it develops its future. We anticipate four vacancies this year to replace trustees whose terms are expiring. If you are considering running for an open board seat we encourage you to attend an upcoming board meeting. Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month in the Activity Center and begin at 7:00 PM.

The Omni Bylaws specify that a “Nominating Committee shall search for trustee candidates from the parent body.” “Nominees must have demonstrated commitment to the school and to the Montessori philosophy.”

Trustee candidates must submit written biographies outlining their skills and qualifications. Nominees’
biographies will be distributed to Omni families prior to the vote held on May 18, 2010.

We will be hosting another adolescent parent discussion group on next Monday, April 26, at 6:30pm in the Activity Center. This event is open to the parents of our Adolescent Program students, as well as any rising 7th grade parents.

Dr. Sara Marcus will be joining us again. Our topic this time centers around setting appropriate boundaries and remaining consistent. We will use homework/school as a jumping off point for a conversation about boundaries and appropriate levels of involvement in your teenager's life. Yes, they need more responsibility; yes, they need more independence; but, they still need clear, consistent limits. Where does the line fall? We will explore this in depth (among other things). So, please make time and come ready to participate in this important discussion.

Our high-pressure, high-stakes culture has invaded our schools and children’s lives, creating unhealthy, disengaged, unprepared and stressed-out youth. Educators, parents, and students are embracing Race to Nowhere, a new documentary film that exposes the insidious silent epidemic in our education system. The film tells the stories of young people pushed to the brink, burned- out educators, and deeply frustrated parents.
Race to Nowhere will be screening on the 13th of October and the 3rd of November at Omni Montessori School.

Race to Nowhere will be screened in Charlotte on Wednesday, October 13, and Wednesday, November 3, at Omni Montessori School, located at 9536 Blakeney Heath Road, Charlotte, NC, 28277. The film will begin at 7:30 p.m., but guests are advised to arrive by 7 p.m. as parking is limited. Overflow parking and shuttle-bus service will be provided at the nearby South Mecklenburg Presbyterian Church. Vicki Abeles, the film’s producer and director, was inspired to make Race to Nowhere out of concern for her children. A mother of three and former Wall Street attorney, Abeles awakened to this crisis in a hospital emergency room as her 12-year old daughter was being treated for stress-related illness. She saw firsthand how the pressures were overwhelming, not only to her own kids, but to students everywhere – in every kind of school environment and community.

Race to Nowhere opened in theaters in New York and Los Angeles for one week beginning September 10th. In a grassroots sensation al- ready feeding a groundswell for change, hundreds of theaters, schools and organizations nationwide will host community screenings on Sep- tember 30, October 4, October 26 and November 4, in conjunction with National Child Health Day. Tens of thousands of people will come together, using the film as the centerpiece for a growing national dialogue on how we can end this “race to nowhere.”
“As a mother, I experienced the stress firsthand and realized that no one was talking about it,” says Vicki Abeles. “I saw kids who were anx- ious, depressed, physically ill, checking out, abusing drugs and, worst case, attempting suicide. I felt compelled to speak out about this crisis by making a film and giving voice to the students, teachers, and parents. I wanted to expose a deeper truth about our education system. We are graduating a generation of robo-students, unable to think and work independently, creatively and collaboratively.”

School reform has become an urgent national issue and 2010 is the year of the education film. Unlike the other documentaries focused on education, Race to Nowhere is the only film that shows what is actually happening to our kids as a result of current policies and practices obsessed with testing, performance and competition rather than meaningful teaching and learning. Bring the whole family to the Activity Center for an evening of ballad belting and crowd pleasing, fist pumping anthems as brought to life by your friends, faculty, and students. A professional karaoke DJ will keep the music going while the Adolescent Students host the evening. There will be an admission price and refreshments for sale. If you want to sing, bring that coffee can full of spare change with you because you will need to purchase every song you sing.

All proceeds from this event go towards the Adolescent Program's end of year trip plus an international charity.

The Big South 5K will take place on Saturday, October8 at 8:00am. The race will start and finish in Blakeney Shopping Center located at the corner of Rea Road and Ardrey Kell Road. The first half of the scenic and shady certified course will consist of rolling hills while the second half is primarily downhill and flat. (Downhill finish. One of the fastest 5K courses in the South!) Participants will be treated to food, beverages, music and giveaways at the conclusion of the race.

The Omni Holiday Program will be Thursday, December 15th at Elevation Blakeney at 6:30pm. The address is:

Omni staff will be in place to handle the logistics of child drop-off. Times for drop off of children are as follows:

Calling all Parents! The Auction needs your help!

The Auction Committee is seeking small donations to create themed gifts for the Auction Gala this year. The following levels are asked to bring a variety of items related to the corresponding themes:

Primary: Gardening
Item ideas include: Gardening tools, gloves, seeds, gift cards to garden centers, gardening books, small greenhouse kits, worm labs or ant farms, stepping stones, birdhouses, etc.

Lower Elementary: Games
Item ideas include: Board games, travel games, word puzzles, outdoor games (cornhole or lasso golf), sports-related and indoor options

Upper Elementary: Reading
Item ideas include: Books, magazine subscriptions, shelving, lap desk, reading light, bookmarks, tote bag for books, accessories for e-reading or Kindle/Nook.

Adolescent Program: Teen themed gift cards
Item ideas include: Gift cards that appeal to males and female teens to restaurants, entertainment, shopping, music, etc.

Cash donations also welcome to help "fill in" baskets where needed! In effort to avoid duplicate donations, we ask that parents correspond to room parent(s) if they plan to donate. Questions can be directed to Kayla Jeffrey, Melissa Grubbs, or Rebecca Parrish. Donations can be dropped off in the main office to Anna or Rebecca by February 28, 2012.

The 3rd grade class of Mr. Webster and Mrs. Williams is organizing a fundraiser to raise money for the Red Cross/ Red Crescent to assist humanitarian efforts in Syria. In order to raise this money the students will be selling bouquets of hand picked flowers arranged with the assistance of Brenna Smith. The arrangements will be sold at both primary and elementary dismissals or can be pre-purchased using a form in the Main Office. The arrangements can be picked up and paid for at any of the dismissal times on the dates of 3/20, 3/21.

April 2nd is World Autism Awareness day, and Omni is going to be lighting up blue in participation! Wear blue this coming Monday to show your support for Autism awareness.

The Contest

One student will be chosen from each classroom for sporting the most blue. Each class winner will be awarded a small prize. Afterwards, all the class winners will come together to see who has the most blue. That person will win the grand prize.

Click on "enter a sponsor code" and enter 15230. Appointment times are every half hour and plan on it taking one hour to donate.

*Donors should eat iron-rich foods for two weeks before donating. Additionally, donors should have plenty of water and avoid caffeine on the day of the drive. All donors will be entered in a drawing to win a $1000 gift card.
