"I have studied the child. I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it and that is what is called the Montessori method."

- Maria Montessori

The Montessori educational method was developed by Italian pediatrician Maria Montessori in the early 1900's. Dr. Montessori had spent many years studying educational methods of the time and had found them wanting. Being a scientist with a strong background in anthropology, mathematics and psychiatry, she turned to the study of children and, based on her observations of the habits of the child, she devised the materials and the approach to learning that are with us to this day.

Montessori classrooms provide a prepared environment where children are free to respond to their natural tendency to work. The children's innate passion for learning is encouraged by giving them opportunities to engage in spontaneous, purposeful activities with the guidance of a trained adult. Through their work, the children develop concentration and joyful self-discipline. Within a framework of order, the children progress at their own pace and rhythm, according to their individual capabilities.

Scientific research is now available demonstrating that children who have had a Montessori education from age 3 through sixth grade enjoy superior academic performance compared to their non-Montessori peers.

"This study supports the hypothesis that Montessori education has a positive long term impact. Additionally, it provides an affirmative answer to the question about whether Montessori students will be successful in traditional schools."
